Teen Counseling (Ages 13-17)

The teenage years are often a time of confusion, frustration, and anxiety for parents and adolescents alike as major developmental changes are occurring during this time. As loving parents, we want to protect our children and ensure they are emotionally healthy, but this can feel utterly impossible as many parents feel shut out from their adolescent’s life. It can be hard to decipher what is normal teenage behavior versus concerning red flags that may be signaling a more serious issue.

Warning signs like anxiety and trauma should not be ignored:

  • Has your teen shown drastic changes in personality? Is your once cooperative and happy child suddenly displaying increased anger, aggression, sadness, or anxiety?
  • Has your teen’s grades dropped significantly? Are they skipping classes or refusing to attend school?
  • Has your teen been sneaking out of the house or running away from home?
  • Do you suspect that your teen is using drugs or alcohol?
  • Are they demonstrating impulsive behaviors or putting themselves into high risk situations?
  • Has your teen lost or gained a large amount of weight?
  • Are you concerned with the ‘friends’ your teen is surrounding themselves with?
  • Has your teen been engaging in concerning sexual activity/promiscuous behavior?
  • Has your teen displayed self-injurious behaviors, such as cutting or made comments about suicide?
  • Has your teen been involved in criminal behavior or had brushes with the law?
  • Has your teen been struggling to cope with parents’ divorce, a death, break-up, a friend moving away, or being bullied?

If you’re concerned

that your teen is struggling to manage their emotions and is beginning to lose control of their behavior it is time to seek professional help from a counselor specially trained to work with adolescents. Likewise, if you as a parent are feeling defeated, out of control, or inadequately equipped with the necessary tools to support, guide, and discipline your child effectively during this season of life then it’s time to seek help from a mental health professional.
